Introducing :: a helping hand

I'm proud to introduce a new series on the Reece's Rainbow blog,
a helping hand. These will be supporting tools from the experts... or articles written by experts for parents!

This post today is a brilliant starting point for this new series and a brilliant starting point for parents of children with special needs and Down syndrome.
Please welcome Lila from BabySignLanguage.com!

Today we have the first in a series of posts by Lila from BabySignLanguage.com on how you can use Sign Language to improve communication with children with Down Syndrome.

One of the biggest challenges with Down Syndrome is that it impairs the ability to communicate.  When parents and children are unable to effectively communicate, they both feel misunderstood, frustrated, and discouraged.  And in this frustration, we sometimes miss those precious opportunities to share the little joys with each other.  Sign language is a powerful tool that many families of children with Down Syndrome have found to improve communication.

My background is in teaching sign language for hearing babies.  Sign language helps parents communicate with pre-verbal children using hand gestures drawn from American Sign Language. Babies can use gross motor skills to form signs long before they develop the fine muscle control and breath control required for speech.  Research shows that allowing babies to start communicating earlier through sign language improves long term language development and increases bonding between parent and child.

Families affected by Down Syndrome have reported many of the same benefits of using sign language.  Down Syndrome affects speech development and fine motor skills, and many children with Down Syndrome experience speech delays.  Sign Language relies primarily upon gross motor skills, thus bypassing the problematic fine motor skills.  Signing provides children with a method of communication that does not rely on vocal speech development.

Signing and speaking are typically used side by side.  This combined approach aids in speech development, increases legibility of communication, and helps children build confidence.  When a child combines a spoken word with a sign, the caregiver has two clues to understand what is being said.  This vastly increases the likelihood that the caregiver will understand the child.  Everyone feels less frustrated and motivated to keep communicating with the help of Sign Language.

So, let’s jump right in!  I want to show you 2 basic signs that I hope you will begin using today.  The signs for “hungry” and “water” are simple to use, and can be practiced many times throughout the day.

Start getting into the habit of using these signs around your child.  Every time you offer food sign “eat,” and every time you offer a drink, sign “water.”  The key to introducing your first signs is providing lots of exposure.  With much repetition, your child will begin to imitate and understand the signs.  The early  version of the signs are not be exactly “correct,” but that is just fine.  Watch out for any hints of signing and lavishly encourage all steps in the right direction.

In the next part of this series we will go more in depth into how to teach your first signs.  In the meantime, if you have any questions, please share them in the comments below and we will answer them in future posts.  Happy signing.

This post was provided by www.babysignlanguage.com the foremost resource for baby sign language offering printable baby signs video dictionary and great community support at Facebook.

The Birschbach 's and their Johnathan

The Birschbach 's are going back for another little guy. They have their appointment on June 9th! That means time to raise funds is short now. They're very excited about this new journey God has them on and can't wait to meet their new son. They've been working hard to raise the funds for Johnathan's adoption. Just this past weekend they had a "rummage sale" :) God is sooo good and His timing is perfect, His plans are perfect. The country they are adopting from is having some make overs taking place in their system starting on the 13th of June, so the fact that the Brischbach's got their appointment prior to those changes is an amazing blessing. You can follow the Brischbach's on their family blog here. http://www.mygodislord.blogspot.com/

Johnathan's big sister Sarah is pitching in to help raise funds too. She's started her own blog where she and some friends sew & crotchet beautiful handmade goodies to sell. When she's not raising funds for her families adoptions, she's doing it for other orphans. Oh, and did I mention she's only 12! How Beautiful!!! You can see all her great work and follow her blog here http://www.handiworkforelijah.blogspot.com/

Your help is so appreciated! It's a blessing we all have to be able to be a part of a child coming home. You can make your tax deductible gifts to their FSP here:
http://reecesrainbow.org/sponsorbirschbach
Your prayers are coveted as they prepare to leave for that beautiful country holding so many dear little loves waiting for their forever families to find them.

You can be a great help in spreading the word for this family and all of our Reece's Rainbow featured families by cross-posting this on your blogs, facebook, twitter. As One We Can make a big difference in helping bring their children home!

Please also grab our As One We Can button to place on your blogs! Thank you!

The Building Blocks of Learning...

Meet the newest twist on an old childhood favorite...building blocks.

What does it do:  The Parents ABC Architecture Block set it perfect for developing hand-eye coordination and motor control as your child is creating all kinds of interesting shapes and forms.  They are also great tools for color and letter recognition.  We even use the blocks to practice counting.

Yay for Reece's Rainbow!

Reece's Rainbow raised more than $1.5 million dollars in waiting child, FSP, and other fund donations in 2010.    That is nearly QUADRUPLE what we raised in 2009.

We disbursed more than $750,000 in adoption grants for children with Down syndrome and other special needs in 2010 alone. (for those who traveled in 2010).  This is TRIPLE what we disbursed in 2009.

In the first half of 2011, we have *already* disbursed more than $750,000.

I love to see God sharing this burden for orphans in the hearts of advocates, donors, and adoptive families alike. We all have a role to play, and I am thrilled to see so many stepping up to do theirs!

On behalf of our entire leadership team and Board of Directors, thank you for all you do, for every child, every day, with every penny.    Congratulations on your life-saving efforts, and for truly being a catalyst for social change, here and around the world.  Keep it up!

Focus on Down Syndrome - I'm Able 2 Model

The first model agency representing people with Down syndrome was launched to coincide with World Down Syndrome Day, this past 21 March.

The I'm able 2 model agency in  Ireland was launched on World Down Syndrome Day in conjunction with 1st Option Model Management, based in central Dublin and it is believed to be the first of its kind in the world..

They have around 20 models signed with them already, ages 5-33 and they are available for photo shoots, advertising, catalogues and catwalk shows as part of the I'm Able 2 Model venture, and will be paid similar fees to other models.

The idea behind the agency is to increase representation of people with disabilities in the media, organizers say, adding that they will work to secure jobs for the models in advertising, catalogs and on the catwalk at competitive wages, reports the (UK) Press Association. To read more click here.

Please contact them if you have any enquiries!

School and Adoption...

Excerpt:

Several common school assignments can make foster and adoptive children feel left out, uncomfortable, sad, and hurt. Projects like the ‘Family Tree’, ‘Bring-a-Baby Picture’ and ‘Trace Your Genetic Traits’ can be particularly difficult for students adopted at older ages; however, children adopted as infants and those living in foster care may also lack the information for some family-based assignments.

Adoption seems to me to be becoming more and more 'popular' or accepted. Adoptions are more open, kids know at a younger age, etc... Society HAS to become aware of how certain things that have always been done affect our kids. So many of them, those adopted internationally or through foster care or as older children have been through enough. With a little positive education, I believe that we as parents, can help make our children's school a safe place that does not unmindfully bring up painful reminders.

Adoption Awareness In School Assignments is a great resource for parents to share with their childs educator!

The above mentioned book, by Christine Mitchell will help you in approaching your child's educators and opening the way for them to understand the importance of their cooperation and awareness.

And just to encourage you more, this little book is downloadable, and it is free!! Just visit this page: DOWNLOAD HERE

Light the Way to Early Writing...

This toy is perfect for children who are learning to write.

What is it: It is the Leapfrog Scribble and Write. Children trace the lights to get practice drawing simple shapes and pictures, then graduate to learning upper- and lowercase letters with step-by-step guidance. Fun learning games help reinforce letter recognition and pencil control skills. Best of all, Scribble & Write uses a single retraceable surface for ease of use and portability.

What does it do:
■Four learning modes can help your child progress from drawing simple shapes and pictures, to writing upper- and lowercase letters

■Features a child-sized stylus, single retraceable  surface and stroke-by-stroke guidance

■Parents can connect to the online LeapFrog Learning Path for customized learning ideas and insights from LeapFrog

■Children simply trace over the lights with the stylus to form letters

The Leapfrog Scribble and Write is a perfect toy for strengthening your child's fine motor skills. The easy to use stylus really does help your child learn control when tracing and writing. I bought this toy for my kindergartner for Christmas and she has shown great improvements in her writing skills. I highly recommend this toy for any child that struggles with writing.

Where do I find it: It's available at Toys R Us.  You can also order it online

How much does it cost:  Around $21.99

Mother's Day...what is THAT?

Today is a really big day in the United States....it's Mother's Day!   Today we all celebrate and honor our mothers and take time to be thankful for the gift of motherhood that we enjoy as well.

But at www.reecesrainbow.org , you will see the faces of some 300+ children who have no mother to call their own.  Because they were born with Down syndrome and other special needs, they have been discarded in orphanages and mental institutions around the world.  They don't know what a mother IS, a problem that we at Reece's Rainbow strive to remedy.
These children have never known the hope of a future. Today is just another day they have to endure, trapped inside those same four walls.   They don't know the joy of siblings, the excitement of learning, not even the simplest pleasure of being able to walk through the grass in bare feet.  They don't even have access to the most basic of needs:  adequate nutrition, appropriate medical care, loving touches, or anyone who really cares if they survive or not.   Unless they are adopted, they will DIE ALONE, hidden away in those institutions, and it just doesn't have to be that way.

We have so many children on our site who already have *sizeable* adoption grants available towards the cost of their ransom.   Been thinking about adoption?  Wondering if the time is right for your family?  Celebrate Mother's Day in a very meaningful way by either donating or considering adoption yourself!
You can view all of our waiting children at this link: http://reecesrainbow.org/new-family/thechildren

But please look for and consider adopting these waiting children who already have large adoption grants!
