Autism and Thomas Trains

Autism and Thomas Trains...

The research
A survey with parents of children with autism under the age of 10 was launched on the NAS’s website in April 2007 with nearly 750 people taking part. Ten telephone and face-to-face interviews were also conducted with parents of children with autism aged between four and nine years old. Four parents in England, two in Wales, two in Scotland and two in Northern Ireland took part.

Summary of research findings
Some of the main findings are:
• In a comparison with other popular children’s characters, Thomas & Friends was the most popular, with nearly 90% of children liking it ‘very much’.
• Many parents felt that Thomas & Friends played a significant part in their child’s early learning and development – in particular numbers, colours and language......

Reece's Rainbow - Yes, I am an orphan, but I am THANKFUL because....

......I was BORN

... I know my "forever family" is out there looking for me.

....God promised me He wouldn't leave me in this mental institution.

...God has a plan for my life!

...NEXT YEAR I could be home with my family!

...I can still smile through my loneliness.

...I'm waiting at the end of Reece's Rainbow

....I have a chance to find my "forever family"....and I know I won't have to wait much longer.

Reece's Rainbow raises money
to help families afford the high cost of adopting orphans with Down syndrome internationally
These children languish in orphanages and mental institutions around the world. Their human value and amazing potential is not recognized, and they are often left to perish alone.

In only 4 years, thegifts and advocacy efforts of individuals and groups such as you have made it possible for more than 350+ children with Down syndrome and other special needs to be adopted into loving "forever families".

DONATIONS during our Christmas Angel Tree Projectand throughout the year ensure that ALL of these kids never have to spend another Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, birthday....ALONE.
1)  Forward this email to everyone you know
2)  Post www.reecesrainbow.org throughout Facebook
3)  Watch and share our Christmas video
4)  Encourage friends and family from all over the world, regardless of faith or nationality, to help save the life of a beautiful, deserving orphan with Down syndrome.

Sensesational Alphabet Book gets 2 thumbs up in my house!

..........................

After having so many kids, the oldest of which is 17 our house seems to be filled with books of every kind. They are stuffed in every closet, box, crevice, book shelf, toy box etc. You get the idea.

I don't buy too many books anymore, we visit the library a lot instead. However, Tavi, my daughter from Bulgaria who is blind, just turned 5. She received the "Sensesational Alphabet" book as a present. And I have to say I LOVE IT!

It has great smells, great textures, sign language, braille, and the voice of the letters and sample word is very clear. I highly recommend this book for any child, but especially for children with vision or hearing impairments. :)

Lest We Forget

A few weeks ago I posted about a vote on a bill that would put a moratoriam on adoptions in Aaron's former country.  The bill passed once, but needs to pass a second time before it goes to the President and is signed into law.  If the bill stays as it is written then adoptions in that country will come to a screeching halt.  I've heard a lot of differing information, advice, thoughts etc. about when the second vote will take place.  It is very possible that the vote will take place next week.  Thanksgiving week.  Some say November 22 and some say November 24.   Some say it will not happen until spring.  Only the Lord knows when that vote will take place.  It is an extremely serious matter and we need to be praying hard that this bill will either not pass or that the wording of the bill changes so that adoptions, especially the special needs adoptions, will not be hindered.  Consider the following:
  • Next Thursday is the LAST day this year when that country will be accepting dossiers until the end of February. This is a normal process that takes place each year. Those families who are not submitted in the next two weeks will have to wait until early next year for submission.

If the bill passes and if it is signed as it it currently written:

  • Then those families who have been racing against time to get their dossier to that country by the cut off date will find all their work to have been done in vain.
  • All the families who are currently in that country and have met their child BUT HAVE NOT HAD COURT will be sent home
  • All the families who have bags packed, plane tickets in hand and are ready to walk out the door to go get their children will not get to go.
  • All the families who have had all their paperwork submitted over there and are just waiting for a travel date will be left hanging.
  • All the families who have mailed their dossiers and are praying they will be accepted either this week or next week by the agency that processes adoptions will not be submitted.
There are about 30 Reece's Rainbow families in the above situations.  30 families who are hoping to bring home over 40 children.  FORTY.  There are over 40 other families who are working hard on their paperwork in order to be submitted early next year.   That is over 70 families total.  We are talking over 100 SPECIAL NEEDS children who have families right now willing to sacrifice everything to get them home.

It is a battle.  A spiritual battle that needs to be won.  Four years ago these children were hidden from society.  They were unwanted.  They were dying in their cribs.  Alone.  But God has raised up an army of loving families who want these kids.  They want the unwanted ones.  They are shocking the orphanage directors, the nannies, the doctors and the social workers.  Each time one of the 'least of these' is selected, they are making a powerful statement to the powers that be in this country and others that these little ones have value.  They deserve life, love and families.  They don't need to be discarded at the hospitals.  They can grow and learn and thrive.  Hearts are changing and the powers of darkness are not pleased.  It is a spiritual battle.  As the church is waking up, realizing its call in this forgotten realm, the battle lines are being drawn.

Pure and simple - we need to pray.  We have on our side, a Mighty God.  He is the One who has called the  church to action and He is the One who is leading this battle.  I have in my house the sweetest little guy because God placed it in on our hearts to GO GET HIM.  Our call did not end when we walked off the plane.  One child whisked out of darkness is not enough.  We need to battle with the rest of the families who are fighting against the odds to get these children out.  They have been called by God and we need to stand with them in prayer that NOTHING will prevent them for fulfilling His plans.

Pray church.  Pray that the bill either doesn't pass or that it is reworded.  Pray that God will continue to move in the hearts and minds and souls of each and every orphanage and institute director.  Pray that the doors of these places would be flung open and that the church would be able to march inside.  Pray that through the testimony of every single family who goes over there, that the system of discarding the special needs children would come to an end.  Pray.  Pray for the vote.  Pray for the people God has put in place who are working around the clock to address the issue.  Pray for the families.  Pray for God's peace to reign in their hearts as they journey in this unknown.  There are numerous other families who are trying to adopt in Aaron's former country who are also deeply affected by this vote.  They are not Reece's Rainbow families but they are just as much in need of our prayer covering.  We know many in this group and we agonize with them also.  They too desperately need our prayers.  This vote affects thousands of children stuck in a very harsh system.  Pray not only for the families, but for God's call for you.  Pray for discernment as you wrestle with whether God is calling you to adopt.  Pray hard, church.

Those who are unable at this time to rescue a child, you are not off the hook.  You are called to support the families who are going.  You are called to GIVE.  You are called to be an encourager, a supporter.  You are called to pray.  So pray.  And lest you forget for whom we pray:

All of the precious little ones pictured above need families.  I can't look at their faces without wanting to cry.  They are helpless, needy and desperately in need of your prayers and support.

Focus on Down Syndrome - JROTC

Hi all, a note that RR WILL be presenting at the NDSC convention in 2011. We have many San Antonio and other Texas families, and am hoping we can get some commitments to work our table from those local folks.

If anyone is planning to attend from outside of Texas, the block of rooms reserved for the convention is filling up. If you think you are going to go you should make your reservation soon.

"Because every family deserves the blessing of a child with Down syndrome...."

Focus on Down Syndrome ~ Stephen Bartko

When enrolling her son Stephen at Leavenworth High School, Cindy Bartko has noticed a table for the Junior ROTC program. But she never pursued having her son join the program.

Stephen has Down syndrome.

But he was among the many JROTC cadets to appear in Thursday’s Veterans Day parade in downtown Leavenworth.

The high school sophomore began attending JROTC classes earlier this month.
He became involved in the high school program after he was invited to fire a JROTC cannon during an Oct. 22 home football game at the high school.

“He got a real kick out of it,” Cindy said.

Retired Lt. Col. David Black told Cindy JROTC officials would work with her son. Black is the senior Army instructor for JROTC at Leavenworth High School.

“He wanted Stephen to be in the program,” she said.

Stephen’s high school schedule was juggled in order to accommodate JROTC classes. Cindy said Stephen has someone to assist him in class.

“Our mission is to build better citizens,” Black said.

He said the other cadets learn something from having Stephen in the program.

“We as people tend to shy away from people with disabilities,” Black said.

The senior Army instructor said he also learns from having Stephen as a cadet.

Stephen lives in Basehor but attends special education classes at Leavenworth High School.

Cindy said her son feels a sense of pride in the JROTC program, which is visible in the way he carries himself.

“He just feels like he belongs, and you can tell that,” she said.

He began JROTC classes Nov. 1. Thursday’s parade marked the first time he wore a JROTC uniform.

Stephen also has attended Leavenworth High School home football games as part of a fundraiser program called First Downs for Down Syndrome and was named an honorary co-captain of the football team, Cindy said.

Finding a family for each of these very deserving angels IS possible....there is no shortage of families hoping to adopt these children...only the lack of funds to do so.

Photo Ornaments
When you donate $35 or more to one of our waiting children, you will recieve a beautiful photo ornament of your sponsored child. With an average cost of $25,000+, every penny adds up to raise an adoption grant fund for each of them!
This is such a meaningful and personal way to "share Christmas" with an orphaned child, and to make it possible for them to never have to spend another Christmas alone.
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
  1. Be a Christmas Warrior for one child by raising awareness through Facebook, blogs, email, church, work, school, family, friends, etc.
  2. Watch and cross post our Christmas VIDEO!

Meet the Families of Reece's Rainbow - The Hannon Family

I want to introduce you to the Hannon family. They are adopting from Eastern Europe! You can follow their adoption journey on their blog!

I've asked some questions to help you get to know Jeff and Debbie Hannon, who just celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary on Monday! Happy Anniversary Jeff and Debbie!

The Hannon family
Tell me about yourself and your family. Jeff and I grew up in the same small town in the Panhandle of Texas. We dated in high school and got married at the beginning of college. We have been married 25 years this year. God has given us 6 children by birth ages 24 to 1 and we pray for more blessings through adoption. Jeff works as a pharmacists and I work at home and homeschool our children. As a Christian family, we strive to let God guide our steps and pray for wisdom along our life's journey.
What can you tell me about the child you are adopting?
We are praying to adopt AJ and Sergei from (4). Their new first names are Matthew and Michael and they will both share Jeff's middle name of Scott, just like all the boys in our family do. Both boys have Down syndrome. Though we have never met our new sons, they are very much a part of our family already and we love them so very much!

Tell me why you decided to adopt a child with special needs? It was after the birth of our youngest son, Justin, that our hearts were opened to adoption. We were told right after Justin was born that he had Down syndrome so we began to research the internet for information about Down syndrome. We came across Reece's Rainbow and God spoke directly to Jeff and I about adopting children with Down syndrome and other individual and unique needs. We are so excited to heed the call of James 1:27 and grow our family through adoption!
What would be your advice to anyone wanting to adopt? James 1:27 says to care for orphans in their distress. Though not everyone is in a place to adopt, everyone is called to do SOMETHING to help orphans in their distress. Pray for an orphan; GIVE to an orphan's adoption fund; do SOMETHING! Reece's Rainbow is the perfect ministry for all of these things.

The Hannon's are hoping to travel in November or December 2010!  Please keep their family in your prayers and if you have a blog will you put their button on it?  If you can help in any way, thank you!

Our Christmas Angel Tree TwentyTen Has Begun!

Our 5th Annual Christmas Angel Tree

Reece's Rainbow Christmas Angel Tree TwentyTen

Running from November 1-December 31 each year, the Christmas Angel Tree is our most important fundraiser of every year.  Hundreds of families hope to adopt our children, but they lack the funds to do so.  With an average cost of over $20,000 to adopt, your generous sponsorship in 2010 can truly change the course of a child's life!

When you donate $35 or more for a child, you will recieve a beautiful photo ornament (WHEN DONATION MADE BEFORE DECEMBER 15!) of your sponsored child to hang on your tree!   This is a very special way to "share Christmas" with an orphaned child, and to make it possible for other American and Canadian families to afford the high cost of rescuing them from orphanages and mental institutions around the world!

This is also a very personal and meaningful GIFT IDEA, and gift cards will be sent with the ornament to your intended recipient. These are great for friends and family, but also for teachers, therapists, caregivers, doctors, etc. Even if you do not celebrate Christmas, our gift cards make wonderful gifts for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other seasonal celebration. We also welcome international sponsors through Paypal!

Make a larger donation for one child, or smaller donations for several children. $5 of your donation for each ornament desired will be shared with our Voice of Hope Fund, to help cover the costs of the ornaments, shipping, and Paypal fees, and to further the work of our ministry in the future. Reece's Rainbow is a true non-profit, and relies completely on private donations to this fund to remain operational, so your gifts for that are greatly appreciated throughout the year.

Also this year we have our Corporate Christmas Warrior Program.
