Meet Stellan!

Stellan likes to go for walks outside.

Stellan has Down syndrome and a mild degree of congenital cardiac malformation – foramen ovale, without hemodynamic disturbances. He is walking but is reported to not be very active. He enjoys sitting and playing with toys. He will pick up a toy and play with it for long periods of time. He likes to go on walks outside. He is making sounds and combinations of sounds, but it not yet using words. He reacts positively to attention from adults.

I'm certain in a loving family with interaction and stimulation he will enjoy being active! He has such a precious and sweet face!

Do you like going for walks? Maybe Stellan could be part of your family!

"Adoption From The Inside Out"

In light of some of the stories In the news of adoption disruptions or adoptions gone wrong, I found this article a very good place to start researching or to share when a family first begins looking at the question of "Is adoption right for my family?"

Approaching adoption from the “inside out” is
an important ongoing part of the adoption journey
that can be incredibly beneficial for both you
and your child. The life-long journey of adoption
is filled with blessings and joy, though it can also
bring its fair share of challenges, loss and pain.

As One We Can..

This week I'd love for us to be able to come together to be of service to the Clark & the Clarke families..

This little one is Abigail..isn't she a doll?!

The Clark family have 4 children at home waiting for her to come home to them. Their youngest, Emma, is 6 and also has DS..I bet she's going to be a great helper to mom & wonderful teacher to her new little sister. The Clark's don't have a blog to follow, but prayers for their journey will be appreciated. Their Dossier's been submitted so Lord's willing, little Abigail will be coming home soon.

And this little princess is Allison, how cute is she?!

Allison is joining a family that loves making history! Her family, the Clarke's, hail from Ireland. Their the first family to find their daughter thru RR from Ireland. Isn't it awesome how God has used the Internet for His glory in the mist of all the junk their is?
She'll be their second adoption from Ukraine. Their son was adopted in 2008 & they were the first family from Ireland to adopt from his region. :) Their really happy about being able to add her to their family. Their another family without a blog to be able to follow along :( But, like always, in every adoption..prayers & financial help are always needed & welcomed.
You can read more about the families & give your gifts of support here http://www.reecesrainbow.com/familysponsorshipgettingcloser.html
Proverbs 3:27 "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so."
Blessings all! Alysha

Meet Sasha!

Sasha is a precious little gift from God.

Sasha desperately needs a loving family, and experienced, patient family who can celebrate every step of progress as a miracle of God!   I can't wait to see the person he becomes when he has a family to love him and encourage him.  He will surely remain bedridden for life if he is sent away, and he is facing that soon.
Please save Sasha!

Can you save Sasha?

Sasha can be found here: http://reecesrainbow.org/olderboys.htm

Sasha  (45)
Boy, Born March 13, 2004

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!
Sasha is a precious little gift from God.  He is 5 years old, but is not able to do much of anything right now.  He is very much still a baby.  He may have CP as well, but is considered severely delayed.  He does a lot of rocking...in his crib, in his stroller...to keep himself occupied.  He has teeth marks in his tongue from chewing on it from boredom.   We do not know if he truly has autism, or he is just so severely impacted by the CP or other birth trauma that the caregivers can't really do much with him, and he turns to himself to soothe.

Meet the Families of Reece's Rainbow - The Smith Family

I want to introduce you to the Smith family. They are adopting from Eastern Europe! You can follow along on their journey on their blog.

I've asked some questions to help you get to know Lisa and Matthew Smith!

Please, meet the Smith Family!
Yana
Tell me about yourself and your family.  My name is Lisa and my husband's name is Matthew. We have been married for 17 years. We have two biological children and three adopted children. Our last two adopted sons happen to have Down syndrome. Anthony came to us at 9-10 months and Ethan came to us a birth-I was actually in the delivery room with him. We also have a daughter in heaven-Carmen-who was born with translocation and mosaic DS. Carmen had open heart surgery at 1 week and two days. She went to Heaven 37 short days after her birth-never leaving the hospital to meet her new family. I am a RN and my husband is a stay at home Dad. We felt it was important to have one of us stay home for the babies. We love all of our children and are very lucky to have a huge support system here at home. We are also very lucky to have a wonderful school system here in our city called Starlight School. They have a wonderful EI program and a fantastic therapy program.
What can you tell me about the child  you are adopting?
Yana is a 2 year old Princess in Eastern Europe. She is beautiful and will fit perfectly into our family. Yana also has Down syndrome.

Tell me why you decided to adopt a child with special needs?
If you read our story you would see...children with DS are so much a part of our lives. My husband and I said that if we are going to adopt we only want to adopt children with DS. They are such a joy and complete us :)

What would be your advice to anyone wanting to adopt?  Follow your heart and not what others want you to do. Seek out support from the vast amount of support systems out there. Do not think you are alone...we are all here to help you!
Please keep the Smith family in your prayers and if you can help in any way, thank you!

For other ways to help the children from Reece's Rainbow, please read the How You Can Help page on the Reece's Rainbow site! If you are looking for a gift idea for someone, your donation can be your gift!

Autism, and Temple Grandin

If you know me, you probably are aware that I am a huge fan of "Temple Grandin". She has done wonderful things in educating the world of livestock producers in regards to humane treatment and working methods for measuring how well you are doing. Being the wife of a cattleman, it should come as no surprise that she is a favorite of mine.

What might surprise you to know is that Temple Grandin has Autism. She has also written some books, my favorite of which is "Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior" I truly, highly recommend it!

The following article shares about her life and her contributions to the livestock industry. In it, it does talk about animal slaughter, so not for the very squeamish. BUT, if you are interested and have questions, the book gives you a much better understanding of the just what she brings to the table, and might even give you a better understanding of animals bred to be part of the human food chain.

But the best part is that I think it makes it obvious that in living with autism, she brings something to the table that others w/o austism could not! She is a gift to all of us, and an inspiration to believe in your child!

HERE is the article. Scroll down to "sidelights" and start reading. You can also do a google search of your own. :)

Quick Prayer Request!

Hey all,

Can you say a prayer on behalf of our Reece's Rainbow families in Eastern Europe trying to find ways to get home? The situation with the volcanic ash has delayed some getting home.

As well, the families set to leave in the next days for their child's country could be faced with travel delays. So include them in your prayers, as well.

Thank you!

UPDATED: Russian Adoptions

** UPDATE: Russia has NOT officially stopped US adoptions. This is brilliant news. The reports in nearly all of the news broadcasts around the world were incorrect. There is much hope for next week's meeting between Russian and US Officials regarding US Adoptions.

Please continue to pray for the situation, though, that good will come out of it for the future of adoptions in Russia.

*************************************

ORIGINAL POST:

I'm sure many if not all of you have heard that Russia has suspended ALL adoptions of their orphans by families in the US.

Whilst this is immensely sad news, the one thing is clear and that is that Russia is wanting to ensure the safety of their children once they are adopted. This is in one sense a good thing and could be a catalyst for helping to make adoptions more positive in the future.

The Director of Reece's Rainbow has this to say regarding the situation and I would ask that you read it and please pray. The children in Russia facing institutionalisation are the ones that need prayers the most. As well, our Reece's Rainbow families that are in the midst of their adoption really need your prayers. Please pray for peace for these families and protection for the children.

As you can all see on the news, it appears Russia has temporarily suspended adoptions by US families as a result of this woman in Tenessee.
At this time, there are simply no details.  No idea what kind of agreement they would require, no idea how long it might take to reach that agreement, no idea if it impacts families already in progress (meaning with a dossier already submitted, not folks in the beginning stages).
So for now, I'd still hold the position that families should not panic.   This could work itself out in a few weeks, no one knows.  I do not believe there will be any accommodations made for special needs vs healthy kids, but that is just my opinion.    There have been tremendous advocacy efforts from many official groups and the government, so I feel certain this won't just be left to pan itself out.
The bottom line is that NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING right now...so don't panic, keep your plans in progress for the sake of your children (for those of you who are in process for a child in Russia)...just hang in there.

Reece's Rainbow Down Syndrome Adoption Ministry

PADS ...

PADS Affects Up to 65% of Adoptive Parents

Unfortunately, it is estimated that Post-Adoption Depression Syndrome affects 65% of new adoptive mothers, according to a survey conducted by Harriet McCarthy, and reported in her October 25, 2007 article entitled, “Post Adoption Depression”. She further explains that PADS seems to particularly affect parents who have adopted internationally,

Friday Focus on Down Syndrome - Artist/Photographer/Business Owner Cinnamon Edgar

With all the negative things in the news these days I was thrilled to find this article about this absolutely brilliant young woman from the Florida Keys, Florida, Cinnamon Edgar. She is a photographer, artist and business owner. She also was a pen pal to a soldier stationed in Iraq during the Iraq war. Oh, and she also has Down Syndrome.

``Never in a million years would I have guessed,'' Segar said. ``Her writing was exemplary.''

Meet Anastasiya!

She will blossom like a rose when she has a family!

Anastasiya has been stuck in a crib most of her life. She desperately needs a family so she can flourish! Anastasiya does have an ASD (atrial septal defect) and an oval window that will need attention when she gets home. She needs to have surgery as soon as possible to correct this! She does has strabismus as well.

She is undernourished, and will blossom like a rose once home with her family.

Could she be who is missing from your family?

Anastasiya  (9)
Girl, Born September 8, 2007

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Anastasiya is a darling little girl with brown hair and brown eyes.     She is stuck in a crib for most of her life, and needs a family to get her OUT!    Anastasiya does have an ASD (atrial septal defect) and an oval window that will need attention when she gets home.    She needs to have surgery as soon as possible to correct this!   She does has strabismus as well.
She is undernourished, and will blossom like a rose once home with her family.
Regrettably, this orphanage is one of the poorer ones, with very little outside aid and very little hope.    All of the children are tiny and undernourished.  These children are immediately transferred at 4, and have little chance of survival where they are sent.  All of our waiting children need families, but these have a critical need.  Please consider one of these children soon!!
I have $1669 in my grant fund towards the cost of my adoption!

Cerebral Palsy

Apparently, having cerebral palsy makes me different.

I've had cerebral palsy since birth and I’ll have it until I'm old and grey. There isn't a day that I'm not reminded I have the condition. And there never will be a day I won't have it. But in my mind's eye, life is good: If anything, cerebral palsy has made me a stronger, more humble person. I can even say having cerebral palsy has contributed to my success.

Cerebral palsy — CP for short — is a condition caused by injury to the parts of the brain that control ...
